Lofoten Links, in Norway, is one of the world's great golfing outposts
For golfers with a sense of wanderlust and an urge to explore the game’s great outposts, the name of Lofoten Links will already reasonate. But now this majestic, rugged and – above all – remote, bucket list destination in Norway, is set to be catapulted firmly onto the international stage, having joined the renowned Cabot Collection, a portfolio of stunning luxury golf resorts across the world.
Lofoten Links sits almost 100 miles north of the Artic Circle at 68° North on Gimsøy Island. It is the world’s northern most links course and a truly stunning example of Mother Nature and golf architecture combing to create an unmatched experience. During the summer months, the sun never sets here allowing golfers to play through the night. When winter darkness descends, the breathtaking aurora borealis, or the northern lights, provides an extraordinary light show in the skies above this unique golf course.
The links has already won international acclaim, having been ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the world by both Golf World and Golf Digest magazines. Its dramatic scenery and breathtaking setting caught many an eye after a visit from acclaimed golf photographer Jacob Sjoman, who brilliantly captured the magic of this destination. His images were shared far and wide across the golf world and interest and intrigue in Lofoten Links began to grow. His single, striking image of the links aglow under the North Lights has done much to spread the word all by itself.
The investment by The Cabot Collection will take Lofoten Links to the next level and into the consciousness of even more travelling golfers, with the organisation welcoming the property into its portfolio as it builds out its presence across Northern Europe. “We are thrilled to join forces with Lofoten Links, “said Ben Cowan-Dewar, CEO and co-founder of The Cabot Collection.

Set in the Lofoten Archipelago, located off the West coast of the Norwegian mainland, Lofoten Links is not easy to get to, but those who do make the journey are rewarded with views of the stunning Scandinavian coastline, a beautiful golf course and some wonderful accommodation, which exudes Hygge. Alongside Lofoten Links itself, the resort boasts a number of cozy, Nordic-style lodges – which offer the ideal retreat after a long day on the links. As well as golf, visitors to Lofoten can also enjoy horseback riding, hiking and kayaking.
Lofoten Links is situated on the island’s northern coast, which means it faces directly north towards the Norwegian Sea, the perfect position to ensure guests can witness the Arora Borealis, one of nature’s most dazzling phenomena.
The course opened in 2005, having begun life in the early 1990s when Tor Alfred Hov set out to build a course on the family farm. Sadly, Tor passed away in 1993 before his project could be completed but his son, Frode, picked up the vision alongside architect Jeremy Turner, initially opening six holes in 1998 before going on to complete the full 18-hole layout.
Lofoten is the latest addition to The Cabot Collection, which already includes the award-winning Cabot Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Cabot Saint Lucia in the Caribbean, Cabot Revelstoke in British Columbia, Cabot Citrus Farms in Florida, Cabot Highlands in Scotland and Cabot Bordeaux in France. The company is renowned for combining stunning golf layouts with luxury accommodation.
It is understood that The Cabot Collection plans to build a larger clubhouse, add to the existing accommodation and dining options and may also look into building a second course on the site to create a destination which can hold the attention of a golfer for a week, rather than just a few days. Lofoten is situated at 68° North, above the Arctic Circle, on Gimsøy Island, Norway. Known for its pure white beaches and dramatic peaks, it requires good planning and patience to get here. You can now fly direct to Evenes (EVE) airport from London, Paris, Milan, Frankfurt and Zurich. During the summer months, you can travel on two different buses from Evenes to Lofoten, although the best way to travel to the golf resort is to rent a car.
The dress code at Lofoten Links is smart casual.
The golf season and the northern lights season align from late August to mid-October.
