When it comes to golf in the Middle East, the stereotypes are rich and familiar: Dubai’s glittering skyline and Abu Dhabi’s beautifully sculpted fairways, for instance, immediately spring to mind. And while Doha in Qatar may not, I’m here to tell you there are plenty of reasons why it really should.
As we take the turn off one of Doha’s frantic highways and slip through the gates into Education City Golf Club, something happens. The noise falls away. The heat softens. The skyline blurs behind us. In its place, a sweep of impossibly green fairways and the sense—felt long before we reach the 1st tee—that this place is different from that which surrounds it. This is a golf oasis, where Doha stops to catch its breath: quiet, precise, intentional.
There is nothing quite like that feeling of arriving at a golf course for the first time, experiencing the welcome, the warmth, the passion the people have for the place they represent. Or not, in some cases. At Education City, we were greeted by the wonderful Anushka, who might be the friendliest check-in host in the Gulf. Fourteen courses played in four countries of late and yet no welcome has felt as warm, or as proud, as this one. Pride is always a great omen of what is come to at a club. Here, care runs deep.

A quirk of our travel meant our clubs hadn’t made the journey, but it hardly mattered. Inside the pro shop, we were spoiled for choice: Titleist, Ping, Callaway, Lindberg, GFore, RLX, Peter Millar—the kind of curated mix you find only at destination clubs where serious golfers come to test themselves. The choice of rental clubs at Education City is also outstanding and as we made our way out to explore the wide open spaces, we did so with a set of sparkling PINGs resting neatly in the back of our cart like old friends. A small detail, but it speaks to a club that doesn’t cut corners.
A Facility Built for Learning
Education City is not just a name; it’s a philosophy.
Practice facilities can reveal a club’s true character. Some treat them as an afterthought. Here, they are the beating heart. The TrackMan-enabled range sits beneath elegant shaded canopies, a gift during the hotter months. But if you visit during the Northern Hemisphere winter, as we did, there is the chance to practice in the sun too. What’s not to like?
The ball dispenser—simple, clever—means no bending, no fumbling, no fuss. Just golf. Prefer grass to mats? They have those here too. The short-game area is insanely comprehensive—a miniature world of bunkers, slopes and tight-cut lies that demand imagination. The practice greens provide the first hint of what lies ahead on the championship course: fast, true, and merciless if you are unprepared. Anyone who skips them risks starting their round with a handful of three-putts and a bruised ego. And so to the course…

A Test Worth Travelling For
Education City’s 18-hole Championship layout is a contradiction in the best possible way—exquisitely beautiful and utterly unforgiving.
From the opening hole, the conditioning is immaculate. The fairways feel lush, woven rather than grown. The bunkers are crisp white arcs. The greens are as quick as anything you’ll find on tour—because, of course, the DP World Tour has recently been here, in the shape of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. But beauty can be cruel too.
Designed by the great José María Olazábal, Education City Golf Club asks questions from the moment you place that first tee in the ground. The bunkers sit exactly where your doubt lives. The water appears just when confidence peaks. And the Qatar wind—that restless, mischievous presence—adds a layer of complexity that never really leaves you alone during the round.
Compared with desert golf in Palm Springs or Arizona, where the off-fairway sand often yields hope, here a miss is usually gone for good. Straight is survival. Patient is rewarded. An attempt at the heroic rarely ends well. Still, for all its severity, the course is wonderfully fair. Approach shots hold. Pins, while bold, are never too mischievous. And when you do putt well on greens this quick, it feels like discovering a superpower.
It’s worth remembering that a Course Rating of 76.0 means that even a scratch golfer is expected to shoot well over par on an ordinary day. A Slope of 139 means the challenge only intensifies for the rest of us. Education City a serious examination of skill—unquestionably one of the toughest tests in the region.

Education City Golf Club: beauty with bite
The course itself is full of highlights. The par-3s are especially striking — beautifully presented, demanding in their both their length and the prevision required, shaped by water which instantly turns indecision into punishment. One moment you’re staring down an inviting green perched above water, the next you’re calculating how much of the breeze you can trust. These holes don’t just test your swing; they test your nerve.
The middle of your round is where the course bares its teeth. Fairways tighten. Angles matter more. The bunkering becomes increasingly deliberate — not decorative, but strategic, with those trademark Olazábal shapes that look almost sculptural from the tee. This is golf that asks you to think: left side for the angle, right side for safety, middle if you dare. Even good shots can leave you with tricky putts on greens that fall away softly at the edges, their speed magnifying every lapse in concentration. You will hit every club in the bag and be forced to execute shots under immense pressure. By the time you reach the closing stretch, the round has built into something quietly dramatic. The landscape opens slightly, offering long, sweeping views of Doha’s skyline, but the challenge does not soften. Here the wind sweeps in turning each hole into a small negotiation. The closing hole, a magnificent par-5 – is generous on the eye, but brutal in execution, its green lying subtly crowned, ready to repel anything careless or timid.
At Education City Golf Club, every hole feels considered, every bunker deliberate, every challenge intentional. There are no filler holes here, no places to hide. Yet the course never feels contrived or punishing for the sake of it. It simply asks you to commit — to a line, to a shape, to a decision. When you do, the reward is a deep sense of satisfaction. That constant challenge here means any round here, feels deeply rewarding.
