The highly-anticipated opening of Pinehurst No 10, has been set for April 3, 2024.
In what promises to be a momentous year for The Cradle of American Golf, Pinehurst is set to open its first new golf course in more than three decades just two months before hosting the US Open for the fourth time on Donald Ross’s iconic Pinehurst No 2 golf course. It has been designed by the celebrated golf architect Tom Doak,
“Pinehurst Resort has been fortunate to be hailed as the Cradle of American Golf, and we’re grateful for all of the major championships and historic moments that have come before,” said Pinehurst Resort CEO Bob Dedman Jr.
“We’re delighted to have a date to begin presenting this incredible design by Tom Doak to our guests. April 3 will not only be another great day in Pinehurst’s history, but for our future as well.”
Doak, who has also designed the likes of Cape Kidnappers, Tara Iti, Pacific Dunes, Barnbougle Dunes, Sebonack, Streamsong Blue and Ballyneal, began construction in January 2023 and, working alongside Angela Moser and her team. Moser’s credentials include work at St. Patrick’s Links, Te Arai Links and Ohoopee Match Club.
Doak has forged a formidable reputation within the game for working with the natural wonder of the land he is given and celebrating that in his designs. With Pinehurst No 10 he is working with arguably some of golf’s most acclaimed real estate: the Sandhills of North Carolina with native wiregrass, natural sand areas, towering longleaf pines and rolling hills.
“We’re excited to show off Tom Doak’s masterful interpretation of Pinehurst golf,” said Tom Pashley, President of Pinehurst Resort. “From the initial routing of Pinehurst No 10 to the shaping and design process, Doak and his associates excelled in all regards. Our very high expectations were exceeded, and we can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
Pinehurst No 10 is located around 4 miles from the main Pinehurst Resort but the benefit of that is a quieter, more remote piece of land that features significant elevation changes and incredible views. The team at Pinehurst are known to have been incredibly excited about the design as it has taken shape, with Doak using the rugged dunes carved out by miners who worked the land in the late 1800s. Speaking about his new design, Doak said, “Pinehurst No 10 starts out fairly gentle, then it starts going into the old quarry works where it gets downright crazy for a little bit, then the course gets up on the hill and there’s a beautiful, sweeping view. All of the holes coming in are challenging, even when you move down into the gentler terrain. It’s a dramatic golf course; more than I originally thought.”
